Considered India’s greatest soldier, Field Marshal Sam Hormusji Framji Jamshedji Manekshaw, whose military victory in the 1971 Indo-Pak war led to the creation of Bangladesh, died in Military Hospital in Wellington, Tamil Nadu late on Thursday night. He was 94.

Birla had established one of India`s biggest business conglomerates and his industrial empire spans key industries like sugar, fertilizers, chemicals, heavy engineering, textiles, shipping, newspaper, etc.
Harkishen Singh Surjeet
The Veteran CPI (M) leader Harkishan Singh Surjeet passed away at the age of 92 after prolonged illness. His demise came about at 1.35 pm on August 1 at the Metro Hospital in Noida. Surjeet, better known as the ‘Chanakya’ of Indian politics, died due to multiple organ failure compounded by a sudden cardiac arrest.

Renowned social reformer Murlidhar Devidas Amte alias Baba Amte passed away at his `Anandwan` ashram here on Saturday. He was 94. Despite being surrounded by wealth, he willingly sacrificed his life to the cause of the hapless lepers. He was a highly learned man who honoured his own education by practically matching its expectations.

VP Singh
VP Singh, who served as the Prime Minister of India from December 2, 1989 - November 10, 1990, passed away on November 26. He formed the first non-Congress coalition government at the Centre dethroning Rajiv Gandhi-led Congress in the 1989 elections. He courted controversy for implementing the Mandal Commssion report that supported reservation on caste basis. He was 77.
