MNS’ anti-north Indian tirade

In what seemed to be a replay of the anti-south Indian tirade of Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray in the 1960s, his nephew Raj Thackeray took up the cause of the Marathi Manoos in 2008. The only difference was that this time, it was the north Indians, who were at the receiving end.

The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena attacked the north Indians in February and instigated a week-long violence against north Indians in Maharashtra. Again in November, the MNS attacked North Indian students appearing for a railway exam. Unprecedented violence followed the incident and even divided the political class into pro and anti-North Indian.

Mumbai attacked

The year also witnessed the worst terror attack on Indian soil when 10 terrorists struck at different places in Mumbai and killed at least 183 people. The state saw a major political upheaval following the attacks, which resulted in the resignation of chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh and Deputy CM RR Patil.
