Serial Blasts

The year saw one of the deadliest terrorist attacks in the sate on October 30 when 18 serial blasts went off in succession across the state killing at least 84 people and injuring nearly 500. The explosions took place in Guwahati, Barpeta, Bongaigaon and Kokrajhar. The blasts took place just after the Diwali holidays making the blasts even more unexpected and resulting in more casualites.

Bird flu outbreak

Towards the end of 2008 the poultry sector in Assam took a beating due to the outbreak of bird flu. 70,000 chickens were culled to contain the disease. All the poultry products from the neighbouring West Bengal, here the avian flu arrived first.

Anti-Bihar violence

In November, a week-long violence against the Biharis claimed claimed 32 lives. The violence began on November 17 after trains from northeast passing through Bihar were attacked.

The violence was reported from Tinsukia and Dibrugarh in Upper Assam and Nalbari, Dhubri and Bongaigaon in Lower Assam.

The Army staged flag marches in worst-hit Tinsukia and Dibrugarh districts to restore confidence among the people, the spokesman said.

The Karbi Anglong district in the state was witness to ethnic violence in 2008, which killed nearly 100 people. The spell of violence flared up on September 26 between the two warring tribes of Karbi and Dimasa.
