Ahmedabad serial blasts

Gujarat, one of the most prosperous states of India, was hit hard by terrorism in 2008. On July 26, at least nine serial blasts in crowded market areas in the space of 20 minutes rocked the capital Ahmedabad. Two people died and 25 were injured, some of them seriously.

Bombs found in Surat

While Ahmedabad was overcoming the grief, panic gripped Surat on July 29 after 25 live bombs were recovered in the city. However, much to the relief of the people all the bombs were defused. Bombs were predominantly placed in densely-populated Varacha region where majority of the diamond cutting and polishing units are situated.

On September 29, one person was killed and nine others injured when a powerful bomb ripped through Suka Bazar area of Modasa town in Sabarkantha district this evening.

Awards

Gujarat, which had been getting the Best e-Governed State Award for the last two years lost it this year to Chhattisgarh.

Temple demolition drive

The BJP government`s drive against temples encroaching the streets of Gandhinagar, invited the wrath of the opposition Congress and Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) alike. As a result of this Chief Minister Narendra Modi had to halt the demolition drive against unauthorised temples.

Gujarat grabs Nano

Though Gujarat was hit by such inhuman acts and political controversy, it struck gold where lies its strength when Tata, after a controversial stay in West Bengal, shifted their Rs one-lakh car Nano project to Sanand near Ahmedabad at an investment of Rs 2,000 crore, declaring that efforts will be made to roll out the world`s cheapest car from a make-shift plant to meet the deadline.
