Kosi catastrophe
Kosi River, the `sorrow of Bihar`, created havoc in the state. The 2008 Bihar flood, which is believed to be one of the worse floods in the history of Bihar, affected over millions of people.
The catastrophe was so devastating that over millions were displaced and nearly 700 killed.
The worst floods in the 50 years swept through Bihar this August, as the Kosi river changed its course following a breach in an embankment upstream in Nepal Aug 18. More than three million people were rendered homeless by the deluge.
The state agriculture department estimated that standing crops in 175,000 hectares of farms have been destroyed in Madhepura, Supaul, Saharsa, Araria and Purnea districts.

Bihar protests MNS actions
The assault on Biharis by Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) activists in Maharashtra had its repercussions in Bihar too. Angry mobs, comprising mostly students, set ablaze trains, disrupted railway traffic and damaged public property in various parts of the state. The protesters targeted Patna, Jehanabad, Barh, Khusrupur, Fatuha, Saharsa, Ara, Sasaram, Purnia and Bhagalpur railway stations. |
