Serial blasts

Insurgency continued to haunt Tripura in 2008. On October 1, at least two persons were killed and about 100 were injured when five bombs went off within 30 minutes in crowded market places and a bus stand. Six persons were arrested in connection with the serial blasts.

In November, state chief secretary Shashi Prakash admitted that insurgency in Tripura, though on a decline, cannot be eradicated completely as the militants were functioning from Bangladesh. There are at least seven camps of militant outfits of Tripura in Bangladesh.

ATS squad

In the wake of the Mumbai terror attacks, Tripura police has decided to set up a full-fledged anti terrorist squad (ATS) to counter the growing threat perception, official sources said today.

Two contingents of paramilitary, Tripura State Rifles (TSR) personnel would be sent to Delhi to undergo rigorous training in the elite National Security Guards (NSG) Centre in December and February next.

Bird flu

Tripura sounded a bird flu alert in the month of December after he spread of the virus in adjoining Assam.

More than 100,000 poultry were culled in Assam during the past 10 days after a bird flu outbreak in the state.
