CWG: CBI conducts searches, registers 4th FIR

CBI carried out raids on Kalmadi’s aides and companies that were connected to overlays in the CWG.

New Delhi: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Thursday carried out raids on CWG OC chief Suresh Kalmadi’s aides and companies that were connected to the overlays in the sporting event. Carrying out the raids at ten locations across Delhi and NCR, a 4th FIR in connection with irregularities in overlays was lodged. Kalmadi was yesterday questioned for eight hours by the CBI. Sources said the questioning centred around the overlays contract, AM films deal and the purchase of the aerostat - one of the main attractions of the mega sporting event. The raids today come as a further blow to the beleaguered CWG chief as his alibis seem to have failed in convincing the officials investigation into the bungling of the event. The CBI is probing irregularities in the award of contracts during the Queen`s Baton Relay ceremony in London in October 2009 and also wrongdoings in awarding a contract of Rs.107 crore for procuring timing equipment for the athletics event of the Games. Officials added that he may be called for interrogation again after CBI matches his answers with records. The Delhi and Pune homes of Kalmadi including the Organising Committee`s office were raided by the CBI Dec 24 and stacks of documents, laptops and computer discs were seized in the eight-hour-long searches. The raids came two months after the mega event concluded amid allegations of major financial irregularities.Three of Kalmadi`s aides - Organising Committee joint director TS Darbari, Deputy Director General Sanjay Mohindroo and former treasurer M Jayachandran - are already in jail.
