New Delhi: Indian Rugby Football Union vice president Aga Hussain has been elected unopposed to the 10 member Executive Committee of Asian Rugby Football Union (ARFU).
This is the first time that an Indian has been elected to the ARFU executive council. The election took place at the Council meeting of the Asian Rugby Football Union in Dubai on December 5th, Rugby India said in a release.
Rugby India experienced its best year ever, winning International Sevens Tournaments in Turkey and UK. The high point of the year was, when in the longer version of the game, India demolished better-placed China in a test match at the HSBC Asian 5 Nations tournament in Delhi.
Hussain, who led the country in its very first
international tournament in 1998, has remained instrumental in
developing Rugby in India. His new responsibilities would
include organising and executing Rugby tournaments across Asia
for the next three years.
"I am honoured to have received the support of the whole
council and this decision endorses the fact that the world of
rugby recognises the giant strides the game is taking in
India. It is clear testimony to India emerging as a Rugby
Power in Asia," said Hussain.
The ARFU is the governing body of rugby in Asia under the
authority of the International Rugby Board. Founded in 1968 by
eight charter nations, ARFU today has 28 members across Asia,
stretching from the Jordan in the West to Japan in the East
and from Mongolia in the North to Indonesia in the South.
