GNDU creates history, wins MAKA trophy for 21st time

Amritsar`s Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU) today won the 2009-2010 Maulana Abul Kalam Azad Trophy (MAKA), the highest Inter-University National sports award of the country, for a record 21st time.

However, GNDU will share the trophy with Patiala`s Punjabi University, also won the trophy in the year 2008-09 along with GNDU. As per revised guidelines which came into effect from 2009-10, two universities were selected for the trophy which is awarded to the top overall performing university in Inter-University tournaments, a Sports Ministry release said. While Punjabi University, Patiala, will keep the trophy for the first six months, GNDU will keep it for the next half of the year.However, both the universities will get the full award money of Rs 10 lakh each. President of India, Pratibha Patil would award this coveted trophy to the Vice Chancellor of GNDU, Ajaib Singh Brar in an ceremony commemorating the National Sports Day at the Ashoka Hall of the Rashtrapati Bhawan on Sunday.Dr Kanwaljit Singh, Director Sports said that this is a matter of pride for the GNDU who have won the trophy for a record 21st time in the 38 years. He said GNDU was runners-up for 12 times and remained in third position on two occasions. PTI
