Former PTI AGM K K Baruah dies

Guwahati: Former Assistant General Manager of Press Trust of India Kartik Kumar Baruah died on Friday following a cardiac arrest at a private hospital in Mumbai, his family sources said.

He was 75.

A veteran journalist of Assam and the North East Region, Baruah had joined the Press Trust of India in the late fifties and served as the Manager of Shillong and Guwahati bureaus of PTI.

He was posted as the Regional Manager (West) of PTI in Mumbai in 1993 and later elevated to the post of Assistant General Manger of the premier news agency.

He had demitted office due to ill health in 2000.

During his posting in Shillong, Baruah had extensively covered the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971 and the Nagaland Peace Mission under Reverend Scott in 1965 in Nagaland.

Baruah was a recipient of the Assam Government Literary Pension since 2000, the sources said.

Baruah, who was residing in Mumbai with his family since his posting there, he is survived by his wife, a daughter and two sons.

His cremation will take place in Mumbai today, the sources added.

Meanwhile, the Guwahati Press Club, of which he was a president, and several other journalist organisations have condoled the death of Baruah.

The PTI Guwahati bureau in a meeting condoled Baruah's death recalling his contributions to establishing the news agency as the most important and creditable news house in the region since Independence, growth of journalism here and his training of juniors in news coverage.
