Chennai: Saina Nehwal and Sayali Gokhale reached the quarterfinal in women`s singles while five Indian male shuttlers also made it to the last eight stage of the India Open Grand Prix badminton tournament.
Top seed Saina snuffed out compatriot Dhanya Nair`s challenge 21-9, 21-9, while Sayali tamed another Indian Gayatri Vartak 21-15, 21-12 to reach the quarters.
In the men`s section, top seed Chetan Anand battled past Saurabh Verma but fourth seed Arvind Bhat, sixth seed Anand Pawar, P Kashyap and RMV Gurusaidutt recorded facile wins to sail into the quarterfinals.From Indian point of view, the only setback of the day was eighth seed Ajay Jayarm`s defeat against Malaysian Tan Chun Seang, who beat the Indian 16-21, 21-16, 21-18.
Against the unseeded Verma, Chetan lost the first game before eking out a 13-21, 21-17, 21-15 win in 52 minutes to set up a quarterfinal clash with Seang.Among other Indians in fray, fourth seed Aravind Bhat tamed compatriot Abhimanyu Singh 21-12, 21-10, sixth seed Anand Pawar thumped Sagar Chopda 21-11, 21-10, third seed P Kashyap spanked Srujan Nandaluri 21-15, 21-9 and Gurusaidutt thwarted Pratik Patel 21-5, 21-3 in their respective pre-quarterfinal matches.
