'Parivar' splits on Mumbai; BJP backs RSS, Sena isolated

Updated on Tuesday, February 02, 2010, 00:39
Translate into:
Mumbai: Mumbai for Marathis, or for all Indians? The question drove a deeper wedge in the Sangh Parivar Monday with the BJP backing mentor RSS saying that nothing should dilute basic "Indianness" and the Shiv Sena zealously guarding its turf to say that the Mumbai was indeed only for Marathis.

Hoping to maximise on the rift, the Congress was not quiet either. Party spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi said the Bharatiya Janata Party should stand by its words and break off its alliance with the Shiv Sena.

"This hypocrisy is an insult to the intelligence of the people of India. Shiv Sena and BJP have close relations for more than 15 years," he said.

And Home Minister P. Chidambaram projected the government's view when he slammed the Shiv Sena for its exclusionary 'Mumbai for Marathis' stand and said such a "pernicious" thesis had to be rejected. The city belonged to all of India, he said.

While the Congress and the central government's stringent condemnation was nothing new, the Shiv Sena found itself isolated within the Sangh Parivar, the loose conglomeration of Hindu rightwing groups mentored by the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh.

In a categoric rejection of its ally's stand, BJP president Nitin Gadkari said identities based on language, region or religion should not dilute "Indianness".

"All citizens of India may be attached to a particular language, region or religion. These identities have never diluted their Indianness. The BJP will never accept the philosophy that there is a conflict between the two," Gadkari said in a statement here.

He said the BJP had always recognised linguistic, regional and religious identities as a reality, but the "strength of India's unity in diversity is achieved when all these identities eventually converge into a larger national identity of Indianness. There is and can never be a conflict between these."

A day after RSS leader Ram Madhav's unusually candid remarks Sunday when he asked RSS volunteers to try prevent the spread of anti-north India and anti-Hindi feelings in Maharashtra, Gadkari was also backed by other BJP colleagues like Murli Manohar Joshi.

The former BJP president said the Mumbai for Marathis stand was unconstitutional. Lashing out at the Shiv Sena, Joshi said: "This is divisive and the worst example of vote bank politics. No sensible person will ever support such a statement."

Stung by the criticism of its anti-north Indians policy, Shiv Sena executive president Uddhav Thackeray thundered in Mumbai that his party did not need lessons from the RSS.

"We do not need lessons from the RSS, It will be in their interest not to rake up the issue. Our stand on this is not new. Mumbai belongs to Marathis," Thackeray told reporters.

He suggested that instead of criticising the Sena over its stand on the influx of north Indians into Maharashtra, the RSS must focus on the plight of north Indians in Assam or teach Hindi to south Indians.

"It should come clear whether it is the RSS' official position or the personal view of Ram Madhav. Ram Madhav is not the sole voice of the RSS," he said.

What Thackeray did not say was that Madhav's remarks followed RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat's comments a day earlier that Indian citizens had a right to stay and earn their livelihood anywhere in the country.

Mohan Bhagwat, who did not name the Shiv Sena or the breakaway Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), both of which have indulged in competitive politics on the issues of Marathi pride, said: "Language, caste, sub-caste, groups, tribes can be different but all are sons of India."

The latest controversy, raked up by the Maharashtra government's move to give new taxi permits only to those who know how to read, write and speak Marathi, shows no signs of abating. The rift could get wider still, leaving the Shiv Sena and the BJP-RSS on either side.

I`m Marathi, from Maharashtra which is integral part of India. I think that we all need to study why MNS and SS are behaving like this... there are many instances where they are forced to react by National Parties ... to get vote bank anti SS & MNS... Think carefully u`ll get lot of incidences... it`s other national parties who are playing dirty politics by touching sensitive points of MNS & SS ... Let me give you simple example of Railway recruitment ..... Recruitment notification was published in all local newspaper in UP, Bihar and other states ... but was not in any local paper of Maharashtra ... if Maharashtrains are not even d when and where is Railway recruitment how will they participate? Do you think this is fair?? I`m not supporting MNS or SS ... I`m INDIAN first ... and INDIAN last ... and we all have to think same... There should not be any regional discrimination from National parties ... else Nathuram Godse will again wake up.....

Hello Friends,

Nice to see comment on Marathi and Mumbai.

As per Overall comment all is political stunt and all political parties are playing with common men ……

But again the question arise why do we vote such Politician and Parties.

As common man suffer then why we don’t come on street as Indian to educate the other brothers about voting right.

Would be highly appreciate if Vikram from Mumbai will answer the common question which was open from last many year..

1) When All Indians are equal and can go to any state for work, so the language should not be barrier for those then why State Like Tamilnadu and cities like Bangalore, Chennai don’t speak Hindi Language?

2) When the Congress Govt always comment on Bihar financial growth then why north-Indian friends leaving their state for money.

As last letter publish in Tamil-Nadu if the IPS and IS officer doesn’t know the Tamil language then they will be throne out of state. But if it happened in Mumbai then why it’s always wrong.

I am proud to be a Indian but same time even Proud to be Maharastrian.

Peace brother peace. We all know the politics behind politics. There is Shiv Sena and others declaring themselves the mouthpiece of Marathis or Hindus. On the other side is we have Bukharis, Ulema`s and others issuing Fatwas thinking they represent (above Allah) the Muslims. Idiots are these people.
Now why it took Congress to decide upon what to say about this Mumbai for Marathi issue. Is it not responsible for the irreparable loss suffered by many innocent because of this promotion of Talibanisation by Indian Government.
Bhaiiyon in this country, it is a common man who suffers. This common man may be a Hindu or a Muslim or anyone else. Let us try to save this common men of our nation.

As a Gujarati, i am saying that Gujarat is the place of all Indian, come enjoy and celebrate the life. The same thinking of common Marathi people. But politician like SS and MSN not want that. Being a Indian every one has right to stay and earn any where in India. This will be very dangerous if we tolerate such thing now common marathi people have to take some steps to stop such violence against our brothers. Please save India from such politician because what they are doing , is same what terrorist want. to depart india. Shame on Shiv Sena and MSN. I appriciate him the sentance against pakistani but not again our indian brothers. Jay Hind, Jay Bharat. Jigar Dave- Visnagar(Gujarat) Mob: 09925732566

BJP is absolutely right in its stand. BJP is a national party and should not be dependent upon or should not be afraid of its immature partne,r which is limited to Mumbai city corporation limits. Politically BJP has lost more than its Mumbai city partner, till date by alliance. Its time for the BJP to stop political loss once and for all forever.

At long last a clarity has come from BJP and RSS while congress is mute and continue to play the politics of vote bank when it can play an active role by taking strict action being in the state and the centre.Surely congress is as much to blame as MNS and SS. If MNS/SS think they are not Indians first should be kicked out of the country as mostly the Marathis are very patriotic for the country first and then for the state.Divisive politics is too dangerous for the country.
