Cold conditions ease in northern region

New Delhi: Cold conditions eased in the northern region today with further rise in minimum temperature though parts of Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh had dense fog. The current cold wave has taken a toll of 550 so far.

The current cold wave has taken a toll of 550 so far. Dense fog reduced visibility to 800 meters at several places in Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh, the Met office said. Amritsar was the coldest place in Punjab with a low of 4.8 degrees celsius. In Haryana, Narnaul had a low of 8 deg C.

Night temperature rose in Jammu and Kashmir to settle above normal mainly due to cloudy skies overnight. While Jammu had a low of 11.3 deg C, Srinagar recorded a minimum of 1.5 deg C. Kupwara in north Kashmir recorded night temperature of 3.4 deg C, followed by Kokernag 1.8 deg C, Pahalgam 1.6 deg C and Qazigund 1.4 deg C.

However, night temperature in Ladakh region fell slightly as Leh recorded minus 10.4 deg C today against minus 7 deg C yesterday while Kargil recorded a low of minus 6 deg C today. The Met department has forecast possibility of snowfall during the next 24 hours in the state.

Mercury rose by a few notches in Rajasthan also providing some respite to the people from cold conditions.

However, there was no no let up in cold conditions in high altitude districts of Himachal Pradesh with temperature staying at sub-zero level. But, the weather was pleasant in Shimla, the Queen of Hills, in the absence of rain or snow.

Keylong, the headquarters of Lahaul and Spiti district, remained the coldest place in the hill state with a night temperature of minus 9.7 deg C. Kalpa in Kinnaur district had night temperature of minus 4 deg C.

A shallow fog enveloped the national capital this morning but flight operations at the IGI airport were normal.
