Melbourne: The Australian Open men’s quarterfinal gave the world a great contest between Roger Federer and Nikolay Davydenko as the former triumphed 2-6, 6-3, 6-0, 7-5 to advance to the semis of the first Grand Slam of the year.
It was a 4 set encounter that was marked with long rallies and power-packed serves, in the end, Federer’s record against his Russian opponent got better by another point. Davydenko had started the much awaited quarter-final with a bang, steady from the get-go, as he put pressure on Federer`s second serve, winning 75% of those points. Federer also committed the mistake of hitting 17 unforced errors, while Davy boy was consistent throughout the set. The result read 6-2 in the Russian’s favour at the offset.Federer however, had different plans, raising his game by a level, he grew into the second set, winning it 6-3.The third set marked the entry of a superb Federer on song. Davydenko made numerous errors while FedEx simply got better by the minute. He wrapped-up the set in 24 minutes with Nikolay managing only seven points in the entire set. 6-0 for the Swiss master.
