Peshawar: Authorities in Pakistan's restive Mohmand tribal region today arrested two Afghan clerics as part of a crackdown against illegal migrants.

Pesh Imam Abdul Hai was arrested from Yakkagund sub-division while Maulvi Niaz Muhammad, who is also a teacher at a state-run primary school, was detained in Haleemzai.

The crackdown was launched to improve law and order in Mohmand Agency, where pro-Taliban militants are active.

Roshan Khan, the Assistant Political Agent of the semi-autonomous region, told journalists that illegal Afghan migrants had been warned they would be put behind bars if they failed to leave the area.

A majority of imams or prayer leaders in mosques in Mohmand Agency are Afghan nationals.
