Mumbai: Train announcements at the CST Railway Station, one of the sites visited on Thursday by Union Home Minister P Chidambaram to pay homage to 26/11 victims, were called off for a brief period during his stay there, causing inconvenience to passengers.

Chidambaram was at the railway terminus, where 58 passengers were killed last year during the terror strikes, from 7.20 pm to 7.40 pm, the peak hour when a large number of suburban commuters and other out station passengers use the station.

Schedule announcements for suburban trains as well as long-distance trains on Central Railway were stopped during the period.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan, his Deputy Chhagan Bhujbal and Home Minister R R Patil accompanied the Union Minister, who paid tributes to the victims by laying wreaths at the memorial amidst tight security at the station.

When asked about the inconvenience caused to passengers, station manager Dinesh Gupta said the announcements were made only when required and refused to comment further.
