New Delhi: Dengue cases crossed the 1000-mark in the national capital with ten fresh cases of the vector-borne disease being reported on Monday even as authorities said they expect a downward trend over the next few days.

"The total number of dengue cases has reached 1,009 with ten more patients testing positive in the last 24 hours," Municipal Health Officer (MCD) N K Yadav told reporters.

There are 13 cases in which the infection has been contracted from outside Delhi.

The city has reported nearly 380 cases of dengue in the past 12 days but health officials hope that as the mercury was dipping, the spread of the disease could be contained over the next few days.

Delhiites experienced yet another cold day today with the mercury dipping to 9.6 degrees Celsius.

Notably, for the first time in nearly two weeks, the number of new cases recorded in a day was in single digit yesterday with seven cases.

The city has reported two dengue deaths so far. On October 23, a 15-year-old boy succumbed to the disease at AIIMS while a nine-year-old boy breathed his last at the LNJP hospital on October 26.

Last year, the city had witnessed 1,211 dengue cases and two deaths while in 2007, the number of cases was 507 and in 2006, it was 3,225.
