New Delhi: Tightening the screws on Union Cabinet ministers, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has asked his colleagues to submit a performance report, in order to keep an eye on the work progress.

According to a news channel report, the report should be submitted to the Prime Minister by November 30.

Dr Singh’s message was put across by Cabinet Secretary KM Chandrashekhar, through a written letter to all the Cabinet ministers.

Reacting to the Prime Minister’s demand Sports Minister MS Gill said, "I will reply once I get the PM's letter." Others like former Maharashtra chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh also welcomed the move saying, "I think this is a welcome step and we all welcome this initiative taken by the Prime Minister. I think it will create a good image of the UPA and the ministers."

Reacting to the demand of performance report, most of the ministers welcomed the new move but some also looked miffed.

When asked about the PM’s new move, Farooq Abdullah, New and Renewable Energy Minister, didn’t look comfortable and said he wasn’t aware as he had not been asked to submit any report so far. He added that the ministers’ performance is seen by the public itself and it knows who is performing and who is not.

Dr Singh’s strong move can be viewed as a new ground to test the ministers, but one has to wait and see if it at all improves the ground situation.
