Rameswaram (TN): MDMK leader Vaiko on Friday urged the Centre to lodge a strong protest with the Sri Lankan government for the "incidents of attacks and firing" on fishermen from Tamil Nadu in mid sea.

"No other country will allow its citizens to be treated so badly by Navy of a neighbouring country," he told an agency here.

The Union Government could lose the confidence of Tamil Nadu fishermen if it failed to protect them, he said.

Fishermen from Tamil Nadu have been accusing Sri Lankan Navy of attacking them in the Palk Straits and had even abstained from fishing to draw the attention of the Centre to the issue.

While India has taken up with Sri Lanka the fishermen's complaints in the recent past, Colombo steadfastly denied any attacks by its Navy.
