Suicide bomber shot dead in Islamabad

Islamabad: Police on Sunday night shot dead a suspected suicide bomber when he tried to attack a security check post in the Pakistani capital.
The suspected bomber emerged from a pick-up truck and attempted to target policemen at the post in Sector F-11 in the heart of Islamabad when alert policemen gunned him down, Deputy Inspector General of Police (Operations) Bin Yamin said.
"He came out of the pick-up truck which had darkened windows and shouted 'Allahu Akbar' and tried to attack the post. Our personnel opened fire and one of the shots hit the bomber in the head. He was killed before he could detonate his explosives," Bin Yamin told Geo News channel.
Officials of the bomb disposal squad were called in to defuse the suspected bomber's suicide jacket, he said. Bin Yamin said it was not clear how many persons were in the pick-up truck, which sped away from the site after the firing.

"A high alert has been sounded in the city and we are searching for the truck," he said.
Footage on television showed the suspected bomber's body lying on the road near the check post, which was manned by five or six policemen.
Pakistan has witnessed a wave of deadly bombings and suicide attacks over the past few weeks that has killed hundreds.
A dozen people were killed when a suicide bomber targeted an anti-Taliban mayor on the outskirts of the northwestern city of Peshawar this morning.
