"A joint operation by the Afghan national army and American special forces which started five days ago in Kunduz province ended today. Over the past five days, 90 enemies were killed, including eight Uzbek foreign fighters," the head of the Afghan army's northern corps, General Murad Ali Murad, told agency.

"One (Afghan) soldier was killed and one wounded during this operation.

"Nine Taliban surrendered before the fighting and 15 were captured during the fighting," he added.

He said the operation had cleared the Gorteita area close to Kunduz of insurgents, as well as the districts of Qala-e-Zal and Chahar Dara.

Previously relatively free of insurgent violence, Kunduz province has seen an escalation in rebel attacks in recent months.
