Centre should caution West Bengal: Cong
Kolkata: West Bengal Congress today said the
Centre should caution the state over repeated violence there
but did not favour immediate imposition of President's Rule as
demanded by Trinamool Congress.
State Congress working presidents Pradip Bhattacharya and
Subrata Mukherjee told reporters here that they were not
immediately demanding imposition of President's Rule, but the
Centre should take some measures to caution the state
government.
"The violence in the state is a matter of grave concern.
We apprehend that violence may spread to all parts of the
state," they said.
The people of the state should know that the Centre is
concerned about the situation in the state, they said.
Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee had yesterday said by
resorting to violence CPI-M was was paving the way for
imposition of President's rule in the state.
The state Congress, they said, would meet Governor
Gopalkrishna Gandhi and apprise him of the situation.
Union Home minister P Chidambaram during the day asked
Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacherjee to ensure maintenance
of law and order following yesterday's clashes between
Trinamool Congress and CPI(M).
