London: A British soldier has been killed in an explosion in southern Afghanistan, the Ministry of Defence said on Sunday.

The soldier with the Royal Logistics Corps was killed in Sangin, in Helmand province, on Saturday.

His family has been informed.

A spokesman for Task Force Helmand, Lieutenant Colonel David Wakefield, said: "It is with great sadness I confirm that a soldier from the Royal Logistic Corps died in an explosion in Helmand Province. He will be missed by us, his comrades, but he will not be forgotten."

The death raises the number of British military personnel to have died in Afghanistan since the start of operations in October 2001 to 224.

NATO forces have highlighted improvised explosive devices (IEDs) set by the Taliban as one of the biggest dangers to troops, especially in Helmand and Kandahar.

Britain has 9,000 troops in Afghanistan and is sending another 500.
