Merga wins Delhi Half Marathon again

New Delhi: Olympian Deriba Merga of Ethiopia on Sunday defended the Airtel Delhi Half Marathon title in men's section while Kenya's Mary Keitany topped the women's category.

Almost 30,000 participants braved a chilly morning to run at Airtel Delhi Half Marathon.

The open category of the main event was the half-marathon of 21.097 km. The other three categories were the Great Delhi Run (7 km), senior citizen's run (4.3 km) and wheelchair Event (3.5 km).

While more than 8,500 participants took part in the half marathon, altogether 30,000 runners took part in the event of which the Great Delhi Run drew the maximum number of participants, both professional runners as well as people from every walk of life.

The event which has grown in terms of participation as well as popularity in the last five years, offered USD 210,000 as the prize money, with the men and women winners bagging USD 25,000 each.

Merga had clocked his personal best of 59.15 minutes at the 21.097km race last year.
