Kashmiri Pandits ask PM to review implementation of package

Jammu: With Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's two-day visit to Jammu and Kashmir beginning tomorrow, an organisation of Kashmiri Pandits on Tuesday charged the state government with failure in implementing the package announced by him during his previous term for the community and asked him to review its execution personally.

"We welcome the Prime Minister to the state. His announcement of employment and rehabilitation package for Kashmiri Pandits in 2006 shows his concern for the community but the state government has done little to implement it," All Party Migrant Coordination Committee Chairman Vinod Pandit told reporters here.

Alleging that the work on Jagati township project announced by Singh as part of his package for providing better housing facilities to members of the displaced community was going at a snail's pace, he said several deadlines set for its completion have been overstepped by the state government.

"Kashmiri Pandits are being given lip service only. Be it the Chief Minister or any other state leader, nobody wants to implement the PM's package for the community", he said, adding that Singh should himself hold a review meeting and pull up the government over its "failure" to implement the package.

It is a pity that Kashmiri Pandits who being the sons of the soil and are very much part and parcel of India, after having been hounded out of Kashmir are living as refugees in their home land India for the past number of years. To alleviate the sufferings of the Kashmiri Pandits, it is time the welfare programmes for them as envisaged by PM Dr Manmohan singh should be implemented in letter and spirit by the J&K state government. The government at the centre should meticulously monitor and review the implementation of the package announced by the Indian government. -PP TALWAR - India a
