Hockenheim (Germany): Motorsports is all set for an eco-conscious makeover with the 2010 Volkswagen Scirrocco Cup will see participating cars using bio-compressed natural gas (Bio-CNG) technology to reduce the carbon dioxide emissions by 80 per cent.

Claiming to be the world's most eco-conscious event, the inaugural edition of the Scirrocco Cup will be held here.

The organisers are also planning to take the event to other parts of the world, including India. Volkswagen claims the carbon dioxide emission from the cars participating in the event would be 80 per cent less than the ones running on petrol.

"We wanted to prove that racing and low emissions can work in synergy. The thermal value of natural gas is higher than petrol and therefore cars running on natural gas have good potential for performance," said Volkswagen's Board member Dr Ulrich Hackenberg here today.

"The Scirocco Cup uses so-called Bio-CNG. It is produced from renewable resources such as grass or a special type of maize as well as from biological waste production, and subsequently upgraded. The Bio-CNG production process is CO2-neutral.”

It generates only the amount of CO2 that was previously absorbed. The amount of energy produced from a tonne of organic residues equates to 60 litres of fuel oil.

“In this quantity, it reduces CO2 emissions by 170kg," he said.
