New Delhi: One of the "most wanted criminals", allegedly involved in 11 cases of murder and kidnapping in Bihar and Nepal and evading police for the past ten years, was arrested here, police said on Thursday.

Sanjay Singh (33), hailing from Bihar's Motihari district and carrying a reward of Rs 25,000 on his head, was caught by Delhi Police' Crime Branch from near NBCC bus stand on MG Road yesterday.

"Our Special Operations Squad received an information that Singh is living in NCR. We laid a trap yesterday and we caught him when he reached there about 5.30 pm," Additional Commissioner Neeraj Thakur said.

A .315 bore illegal firearm, two live rounds and a car have been recovered from his possession. Eleven cases of murder, kidnapping for ransom and extortion have been solved with his arrest, he said.

"Singh had devised a unique method to evade the police. He used to kidnap people from Bihar and would keep them in captivity in Nepal. Those kidnapped from Nepal were kept in captivity in Bihar," he said.

During interrogation, he said that after completion of education, he along with his elder brother opened a fertiliser shop but it did not do well. His father was a primary school teacher.

Singh, who is running an interior decoration unit in Sushant Lok in Gurgaon, had "vowed" not to get arrested after his first arrest in 1994, Thakur said.

He was living in Gurgaon from 2000 and he shifted to Aya Nagar in 2007.

"He used to quietly sneak into Gurgaon after committing crime in Bihar or Nepal," Thakur added.

In 1993, Singh along with three others allegedly kidnapped an 18-year-old boy from Motihari. His associates were arrested, but he escaped and was caught a year later.

Singh remained in jail for a year where he met Tun Tun Singh, a notorious gangster. After release from jail, Singh along with Tun Tun stayed in Kathmandu for 18 months and came back to Motihari in 1998.

"He then started extorting protection money on behalf of Tun Tun from businessmen of Motihari, Muzaffarpur, Betia and Ruxsol districts," Thakur said.

After Tun Tun was killed by rival gangs in 2000, Singh took the reins of the gang. Next year, his associates were arrested for the murder of a businessman while he managed to evade arrest.

In other cases too, his associates were arrested.
