Bhopal: The doyen of Indian athletics, PT Usha being denied adequate facilities is not just a one-off case but an incident that can well explain why India despite having a huge pool of talented individuals is not able to rise upto expectations at international level sports events.

The country’s best ever Olympics performance in Beijing last year had raised hopes of reviving the fortunes of Indian sports but incidents like these put a huge question mark over the optimism.

A day after World Boxing Champion MC Mary Kom complained of sub-standard accommodation and food during National Boxing Championships, it was the turn of flying queen PT Usha to face the humiliation.

PT Usha was accompanying an athletics team in capacity as a coach at National Open Athletics being held in Bhopal, when the organizers ensured that doyen of Indian athletics weeps in front of the gathered media.

Usha broke down in tears while narrating the horrendous tale of shabby arrangements provided to her and the young team during the event. A complaining Usha said, “ After all these years of playing at the national and world level a athlete wants some amount of respect from the officials, but forget that if PT Usha was made to share a room with five others then condition of a relatively new athlete can be imagined.”

The event comes as a huge shock to the nation which is preparing itself for a mega event like Commonwealth Games to showcase its might to world.

One being asked if incidents like this were the reason why India fails to perform at the bigger stage, a somber looking Usha said.

“It is because of this that parents do not encourage their children to take up to sports. If we want to win medals at Olympics and other important events, we will have to do something about it.”

We indian have still GULAMI in our blood, thats is why we respect and pay cricketers. Cricket used to be an ANGREZ game, only 18 countires in the world is playing cricket where as PT usha won gold in an event where whole world countireis participated and it also in an individual competetion. There is no comparison of her achievement with any cricket star. All sports persons should b treated equally. In indian like a country 30 percent people live below povert y line how a poor man can buy a bat costing min 500 rs to his child to play cricket. cricket is a bloody rich men game and it only benifit rich people even knowing all these facts poor ignorant indian go mad on these game. Time has come to stop this nonsence and give respect to all games in equal terms. -thomas - delhi a
It is really a matter of concern for a country like India. The fact is that despite claims that all sportsmen are equal, there is a sharp partiality towards some sportsmen. If we can`t get rid of such incidents, we can`t hope India emerge as a sporty nation. -Probir - Naharkatia a
This is disgusting! Looks like there is no place or respect for any other sports and sportsperson than cricket. Ms. Usha, we all are very proud of you for the glory you have brought for our country and we all stand by you. Shame on you insensitive jokers who treated Ms. Usha like this. -RV - Chennai a
The lesson to be learnt is when your career is over don`t come in public view. This happens to old parents also. Mera Bharat Mahan!!!!!!!!!! -B B Biswas - Mumbai a
YES, immediate efforts are required to improve facilities in all sports. At domestic level all sports receive the same shabby treatment including cricket. This can only be done primarily by the authorities-in-charge including the politicians for funding & improving the infrastructure required for lodging the participants & staff with good facilities & NOT sub-standard. It isn`t a crime to love a particular sport be it Cricket. Majority of Indians have been brought up loving this game but we do admire other stars as well who have excelled in Shooting, Tennis, Boxing, Wrestling, Athletics etc. Dhoni & co have worked hard to reach where they are. At international level nothing comes easy. So please do not ENVY our boys & especially CRICKET. -Rajesh - Dehradun a
This is such a disgraceful act. Shame on our offcials. Just concentrating on cricket is not enough. Athletes like P.T Usha had brought laurals to our country, and just flaunting their names and their pictures and videos during August 15, and January 26 is not enough. They should bea lways honoured and respected . I suggest the officals who are on schedule for the event should be fired with immediate effect and this should be sourted out in such a manner that it remains an example for others. Dear P.T. Ushaji, dont feel disheartened you are always and will remain the golden girl. Indian politics is dirtiest one. -SJISH - KUWAIT a
It is not Sposrts ministry mistake , its PT Usah who is responsible , who has asked her to be in Atheletics or may be in any other sporyts apart from cricket . It is who make mistake , this news will vanish in few days and gain some other incidents will happen like this but we Indians will never learn anything . She should join ploitics and earn handsomely or join some other country national coach . -anil - hyd a
It is such a sad state of affairs. But i am sorry to say this to everyone reading this including myself that our memory is very short-lived. We have only learned to love cricket as a game and dont bother to give any respect to other sports. Dhoni and his co. have been badly humiliated recently but we will forget that as soon as they thrash Aussies after making a spinners friendly pitch at home. Dont be surprised that they may have tough time even after creating such pitches. And the golden girl weeping incident will rest in peace after some time...this isnt the first time that an incident like this happened. I think it calls for a nation-wide effort from one and all to stop being fascinated about cricket only but promote other sports as well. We must know that cricket isnt even known as a sport in many nations.Wake up ladies and gentlemen to the reality. Its time that people like Saina Nehwal, Vijender Singh, Pankaj Advani etc became national sports icons and the Dhonis and the Yuvrajs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! -Captain Sagar - Gurgaon a
Really its shameful things to heard in 21st century of india, one side government is spending crores on infrastructure and defence and other side situation is pathetic in sports i think india is the only country who need to understand meaning of developing country. -atul - mumbai a
APPALLING!!! The state of Indian sports remains under doubt coz of such incidences. PT Usha brought glory to the nation, gave hope to many aspiring athletes. How can the organizers even dare to undermine her stature. -Saurabh - New Delhi a
