Kolkata: Houghton was said to be displeased over the meeting between officials from the All India Football Federation, Mohun Bagan and Bhaichung just a day prior to the all important Nehru Cup final. The Indian skipper had earlier asked for an early solution to the issue as it distracted him from the job at hand. Houghton believed that such meetings only disturb a player’s mind before a key match.
“It is a ludicrous situation. The captain of the national team has been put into that situation. No one is criticising Mohun Bagan and the fans of the club. Mohun Bagan needs better leadership,” Houghton was quoted saying.
Taking offence of the above words, Mohun Bagan called for an emergency Executive Committee meeting following which they stated that if Houghton doesn’t apologize, they shall think twice about sending their players to the national camp.
“Mohun Bagan is very unhappy over the remarks made by Bob Houghton. Mohun Bagan’s leaders are elected democratically.”
“To comment on our club is beyond his jurisdiction as he is a paid coach. To interfere in our matters is none of his business.”
“If he doesn’t apologize, we shall think whether to allow our players to train under him in the national camp,” Mohun Bagan general secretary Anjan Mitra said.
