New Delhi: It was a memorable reunion for the 1975 World Cup hockey team. The team led by Ajitpal Singh beat Pakistan in the final at Kaula Lumpur to win India`s only World Cup.
They shared the dias with International Hockey Federation (FIH) president Leandro Negre Monday as the 2010 World Cup trophy was unveiled. Ajitpal, Zafar Iqbal, B.P.Govinda, Brigadier H.J.S. Chimni, Ashok Dewan were some of the members of the 1975 winning squad who were present at the ceremony. Magical moments from that famous victory were relived as an audio visual of images from the tournament and their triumphant return to home was played. "We fondly remember those days and how passionately we played hockey. Hockey used to be so popular in those days. We were given a overwhelming welcome on return," said Govinda. "We could have won the final with more goals," he said going back the memory lane. Govinda is optimistic that the golden days of Indian hockey is just round the corner. "They have taken the right step in appointing a foreign coach. Let us give him some time and I am sure he will produce results. We should not expect the team to do wonders in the next World Cup to be played here because we are not among the top teams. They will take time to come back to the top level. We should be patient."
