Indian athletes win three medals in UK Throws & Jumps meet
Mahan Singh won a gold in men`s
long jump as Indians bagged three medals on the opening day of
the United Kingdom Throws and Jump Festival at Birmingham.

New Delhi: Mahan Singh won a gold in men`s
long jump as Indians bagged three medals on the opening day of
the United Kingdom Throws and Jump Festival at Birmingham.
Mahan jumped 7.55m in his fifth attempt to edge out one
of the top UK jumpers Andre Fernandez who was leading with
7.54m till then.
Two other Indians in the competition, Shiv Shankar Yadav
and Ankit Sharma finished sixth and eighth with efforts of
7.20m and 7.15m respectively yesterday.
National record holder high jumper Hari Shankar Roy
improved on his last week performance at the same venue during
the Birmingham Games by leaping to 2.14m to win a silver.
Compatriots Benedict Starly and Jithin Thomas finished
fourth and sixth in the same event by clearing 2.04m and 2.00m
respectively.
In the men`s shot put, Satyender Singh finished third
with a throw of 17.61m. Another Indian, Saurabh Vij finished
fourth by clearing a distance of 17.51m.
UK`s top thrower Carl Myerscough won the event with his
season`s best of 20.19m.
The Indian athletes are on a training-cum-competition
camp in London at the Newham Sports Academy. They will take
part in the LEAP European meet at Loughborough on July 29.
