Srinagar, July 11: The situation in Srinagar continued to be tense, as shops and business establishments remained closed for the fourth consecutive day on Saturday protesting against the alleged high-handedness of the police and paramilitary forces.

The separatists, who had called for strike yesterday, had appealed people to resume their normal activities today.

However, shops and business markets in Maisuma, Madina Chowk, Lal Chowk, Red Cross Road, Hari Singh High Street, Regal Chowk, Polo View, Court Road, Maharaj Bazar, Gonikhan, Basant Bagh, Nai Sarak, and Abi Guzar in uptown areas remained closed, official sources said.

Business establishments also remained closed in most parts of the old city in protest against the arrest of youths picked up by police during night raids, they said.

Srinagar was in grip of protests since Wednesday, when the body of an undergraduate student Asrar Mushtaq Dar, who went missing since July 3, was recovered by the police from Rainawari locality of the city.

Kashmir Valley observed a strike yesterday against Asrar's murder and mysterious death of a college girl Aamina at Dolipora, in Kupwara district on Thursday.
