Over 300,000 evacuated as flood inundates south China

Beijing, July 04: More than 300,000 people have been
evacuated after torrential downpour, which continued for three
days, flooded the banks of Rongjiang River, inundating several
houses in southern China.
150,000 people living in the low-lying areas near Kama
reservoir have been moved to safety after the rain destroyed a
44-foot section of a dyke near the dam in Guangxi province,
a news agency reported today.
In Jiangxi Province, two people were killed, three more
were missing and more than 100,000 have been evacuated
following the heaviest rain this summer, the report said
quoting local flood control authorities.
The overflowing Rongjiang River have also forced 47,000
people of Rongshui County to leave their houses.
According to the County government, half of the 20
townships reported rainfall up to 200 mm from Wednesday to
Friday.
Several houses in the rural areas were also destroyed in
the flood, while farmlands were inundated and crops damaged.
Earlier Xinhua had reported that 20 people had died and
eight were missing in the flood.
With water levels of some rivers in Gaungxi touching the
highest since 1998, China experienced worst flooding in over
100 years.
