Chandigarh, July 04: India hockey captain Sandeep Singh has been appointed as the Deputy Superintendent of Haryana Police for his outstanding achievement in the national as well as international circuit, Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda announced today.

"Earlier too, we have appointed various sportspersons as DSPs in the police force. We are giving various incentives to them and this is yielding encouraging results," Hooda said of the drag-flicker's appointment, who hails from Shahbad.

At a felicitation programme to honour 13 outstanding sportspersons of the state here, Hooda also said the state government would soon come with a comprehensive Sports Policy with a provision to scout for talents from rural as well as urban areas.

"Over the last few years, the players from the state have been doing very well and have brought laurels not just to the state, but to the entire nation. Their success indicates that Haryana has been rapidly making progress in various fields," he said.

The Chief Minister said his government has constructed stadiums in 168 villages keeping in mind the ample potential in the state, especially in rural areas.

Haryana Sports Minister Kiran Choudhry said the new Sports Policy would be "inclusive and growth-oriented".

She urged the Chief Minister to further enhance the budget for promotion of sports and give more incentives to the coaches.

The present budget for sports in Haryana is Rs 58.40 crore, which had been doubled after the Congress came in power in the state four years back.

Meanwhile, 13 outstanding sportspersons of the state were presented with cash awards ranging from Rs 50,000 to Rs one lakh at the felicitation programme.

The 13 players included seven members of the Indian women's hockey team that won gold at the just-concluded Champions Challenge II tournament at Kazan, Russia.

The seven players of the women's hockey team -- Jasdeep Kaur, Jeodeep Kaur, Rani Devi, Ritu, Surender Kaur, Mamta Kharab and Savita -- were presented with cash award of Rs one lakh each and a memento.

Apart from hockey players, the other six sportspersons to be honoured today were boxers, who dazzled in the Senior Asian Boxing Championship in China last month and Sub-Junior World Boxing Championship in Armenia in May.

The boxers include Jai Bhagwan, who won silver at the Asian Championship and was presented with cash award of Rs 75,000 and a memento.

Four other boxers -- Vijender Singh, Dinesh Kumar, Jitender Kumar and Paramjit, who bagged bronze in the Asian Championship, were presented with a cash award of Rs 50,000 each, while another Sandeep, who also won a bronze at the Sub-Junior World Boxing Championship, was honoured with a cash award of Rs one lakh and a memento.

On the occasion, Hooda also honoured national women's hockey team coach M K Kaushik and Deputy Director (Hockey) of the Haryana Sports and Youth Affairs Department Baldev Singh in recognition of their services.
