Definition of sexual assault needs to be 'widened'
Updated on Thursday, July 02, 2009, 21:43 IST
New Delhi, July 02: The definition of sexual assault needs to be "widened" to include molestation while the judicial process in rape cases should be fast-tracked, NCW Chairperson Girija Vyas said here today.

Vyas said there was an imminent need to bring about a change in law to deal with sexual violence against women, the proposal for which has been sent to the government by NCW.

"We have already submitted a bill in this regard to the government. It is for widening the definition of rape to make it more comprehensive and cover molestation and eve-teasing as well" under sexual assault, Vyas said at the screening of a documentary directed by filmmaker Lavlin Thadani on the issue.

She said besides comprehensive reform in the law dealing with rape, the legal process should ensure that cases are settled in less than a month and the tortuous process of requiring the victim to give statements repeatedly be done away with.

"Currently 36 bills are pending before Parliament, and our proposal is still with the government, yet to go to the legislation-making body," Vyas said, adding she will take up the issue in Parliament.

The NCW Chairperson said there are 2.78 crore cases of rape pending in courts at different levels, according to statistics of the National Crime Records Bureau.

"We need to fast-track the process of justice to ensure that the cases are disposed of within 21 days on a single statement of the victim," she said.

I think the time has come when there is no need for a court or any process of justice needed, when concenring a matter involving a woman. If everythin gshe says or intends is to be taken with such utmost credibility (no matter however deceptive or beguiling she act out) why have any sensile process at all. The Womens` groups like all political groups are simply after more and more powers, however unreasonable those may be. And me in their ever indulging and women adulating mind-set are over willing to oblige. There are tons of laws all over offering very special `rights` to women, ofocurse in the name of `equality and there seems to be no end to the apetite for these power-groups. The law-enacting bodies should learn to completely ignore them and listen to the voice of jursiprudence and sense only. However, this is as utopian as men being objective about matters concerning women. You know what all these would ultimately lead to...... a hard conservatism, One day men are going to say, Enough is finally enough. If you cannot live or let live sensibly, just go back to your holes and you are not allowed any further freedom. The cycle goes back.... -Ranjan Banerjee - Kolkata a
If this bill is passed then lots of balckmailing will be involved in society. Every girl who has some issues with some one or who is in need of money will black mail the individual and demands for money. I feel pity about our indian law. Last week also I stated that the women who filed a case against delhi police was fake. But these zee news people ahve not posted that on screen. Why this is so. You should post each and evry post. Why you people are gender biased against women. If some one wanst to raise voice against women laws why you are not displaying. I am not against women but I am against such type of false cases that women files and now adays women are misusing indian law very well. -Charanpreet - India a
