UP govt wants chargesheet to be filed against Varun
Updated on Thursday, July 02, 2009, 21:30 IST
Lucknow, July 02: Uttar Pradesh Law Department has favoured filing of chargesheet against BJP MP from Pilibhit Varun Gandhi for his alleged hate speeches, government sources said today.

The opinion on whether to prosecute the BJP leader was sought by the state Home Department in connection with the alleged hate speeches of Varun during public meeting at Barekhera and Lalauribagh on March 7 and Deshnagar on March 8.

According to sources in the government, the law department in its capacity as an advisory body has favoured prosecution of Varun. The issue is now pending with the state government.

In case the government gives its nod for prosecuting Varun, the Pilibhit administration would file a chargesheet against the 29-year-old BJP leader, who is out on bail in cases relating to making provocative speeches during campaigning for recent Lok Sabha elections.

Pilibhit police had late last month sought permission from Uttar Pradesh government to file a chargesheet against Varun. "The chargesheet was ready to be produced before the court. A letter has now been sent to the state government seeking permission to file the chargesheet," district Superintendent of Police Prakash D had said.
