New Delhi, July 02: A total of 81 confirmed cases of attacks on Indians, including students, have been reported in Australia since May 23 this year, the government informed the Rajya Sabha on Thursday.

Overseas Indian Affairs Minister Vyalar Ravi said the Australian government has informed India that it was taking a series of steps to check attacks on Indians and ensure their safety.

"The total number of confirmed cases of attacks on Indians, including students, since May 23 is 81," he said.

Ravi said the matter has been taken up with the Australian government at the highest level.

"It has been conveyed to them that such attacks should not be allowed to happen and that it is the responsibility of the police authorities in particular to ensure the well-being and security of our students in Australia," the minister said.

He said that in some cases, arrests have been made and offenders charged.

Just to quote a gay activist from recent pro-gay indian court ruling & my personal successful experiences in reducing ethnically targetted racism in canada ( being a indian born canadian), I feel the constitutional rights, privilages given to gays & minorities in any country in the world encourages visibility, visibility in turn leads to change in attitudes & prevailing stereotypes which is the key to acceptability within the local culture be it for gays or for ethnic minorities ( like indians) in foreign countries. In short, constitution and law vcan give you the rights & freedoms you rightly deserve but its upto you & your community to uphold that rights & fight for it by increased visibility & participation in the local cultural mosaic whether you agree or disagree with its views/opinions. make your presence/views/opinions count/known. you will get more respect, with a little bit of patience.
