New York, July 01: Bing, the new search engine from
the Microsoft stable, has cornered little over one per cent US
market share in June even as arch rival Google continued its
domination.
With the launch of Bing in June, Microsoft has seen its
American search market share climb to 8.23 per cent last
month, according to the figures from internet data firm
StatCounter.
In April, the US market pie of Microsoft stood at 7.21
per cent.
Google continued to hold the fort in the search market
with a share of 78.48 per cent in June while that of rival
Yahoo! touched 11.04 per cent during the same period.
However, the share of Google has come down marginally
from April's 79.07 per cent.
"At first sight, a one per cent increase in market share
does not appear to be a huge return on the investment
Microsoft has made in Bing but the underlying trend appears
positive.
"Steady if not spectacular might be the best way to
describe performance to date," StatCounter Chief Executive
Officer Aodhan Cullen said.
Bing is widely seen as the latest offering from Microsoft
aimed at challenging the dominance of Google in the search
market.
In terms of weekly trends for June, Microsoft's (Bing,
Live Search and MSN Search in total) market share peaked
following the launch of Bing, at 9.21 per cent in the first
week.
"But after falling away in the following two weeks it had
staged a comeback in the last week in June to 8.45 per cent,"
the StatCounter said.
Data is based on an analysis of 1.316 billion search
engine referring clicks (336 million from the US) which were
collected from the StatCounter network of over three million
websites.
Globally, Microsoft had a share of just 3.30 per cent in
June as compared to 3.08 per cent in April. In June, Google
had a market share of 89.80 per cent while Yahoo!'s touched
5.15 per cent.
