People take to streets following non-availability of power
Updated on Friday, January 02, 2009, 00:00 IST
Srinagar, Jan 02: Hundreds of people on Friday blocked the Srinagar-Muzaffarabad road in Uri sector of Jammu and Kashmir, demanding uninterrupted power supply.

The residents blocked the road today morning at Nowshehra in Uri, 101 kms from here, alleging that they were not getting power supply for the past two months, official sources said.

The residents were agitated over non-availability of the power supply despite the fact that two power projects - 480 MW Uri and 105 MW lower Jehlum - are operational in Uri tehsil of Baramulla district.

The residents threatened that they will not pay the electricity dues in case power supply was not restored immediately in their area.

They also demanded replacement of the Power Development Department staff stationed in the town.

However, the residents lifted the road block after nearly two hours of sit-in following assurance by senior civil and police officials that their demands would be met.
