Thiruvananthapuram, Sept 10: The state-wide Onam celebrations, organised by the Kerala Government as part of its tourism promotion plans, got off to a colourful start here Wednesday.
The event was inaugurated by Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan and attended, among others, by Home and Tourism Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan.
Speaking on the occasion, Achuthanandan claimed that the LDF Government had provided relief to all sections of society, particularly farmers, who were reeling under severe financial crisis.
"The policy initiatives of the government are aimed at bringing back the glorious days of agriculture."
Cultural programmes, food festivals and mega-shows
sponsored by different television channels have been planned
as part of the celebrations that will conclude on September
16. Programmes would be held in 14 different venues on these
days.
Illumination of roadside trees, government offices and
private buildings have added colour to the celebrations in the
city. The shopping spree has also touched its peak, with
people thronging Onam markets in large numbers. 'Thiruvonam'
falls on September 12.
Roadside vendors selling ready-made dresses, home
appliances and other items are doing brisk business.
Security has been strengthened at the festival venues by
deploying more police force. Close circuit TV's have also been
installed in important points.
The celebrations will end with a colourful pageant here
on September 16.
