New Delhi, Aug 01: The Gurgaon Sessions Court gave its consent on Friday to the divorce plea filed by Rahul Mahajan and Shweta Mahajan. District and Session Judge Ramendra Jain granted them
divorce after both parties mutually agreed on the move.
"It had been mutually decided by both the parties to seek
divorce for their benefits," their advocates told reporters
here.
Rahul and Shweta, who completed their course in flying
together abroad, married on August 29, 2006.
Earlier, Shweta appeared before a court here on December
13, 2007 and sought divorce by mutual consent as per section
13(B) of the Hindu Marriage Act.
However, the court said that consent would only be
granted when both parties appear in court.
Rahul, son of BJP leader Late Pramod Mahajan was having sour relations with his wife ever since they got married. Moreover, last year photographs of Shweta had appeared in a Mumbai tabloid showing bruises on her arm.
Shweta had then filed the mutual-divorce petition last December, alleging regular physical and verbal abuse by Rahul. Today was the third hearing of the case; the last one was on January 24 this year.
However, Rahul was not keen on divorcing Shweta, over apprehensions that it might adversely affect his political ambitions.
