Maldah, June 16: The 500-year-old Vaishnavite fair 'Ramkeli Mela' is underway near Gour in Maldah district of West Bengal.

The 6-day fair that began on Sunday has drawn scores of faithfuls and monks from across the country with several forms of rituals and devotional songs being performed.

The fair has been organised to commemorate the arrival of Sri Chaityana in this holy place on 'Jaishtya Sankranti' some 500 year ago.

The government has opened temporary medical centres and arranged additional transports for smooth conduct of fair, attended by about 500 people a day. The officials have also tightened security in the area bordering Bangladesh.
