New Delhi, July 23: Scores of Congress workers and leaders on Monday congratulated party chief Sonia Gandhi on the victory of UPA-Left nominee Pratibha Patil in the just concluded presidential election.

Several party leaders, including general secretary Janardan Dwivedi and Ambika Soni, met Gandhi at her 10, Janpath residence to greet her on the role she played in Patil's spectacular win over NDA-backed Independent candidate Bhairon Singh Shekhawat.

Hundreds of party workers -- the young and the old -- thronged Gandhi's residence shouting slogans, hailing her and the Congress party.

"I have come to thank Sonia Gandhi for her role in electing the first woman President of Independent India," said Kulpreet Kaur waving a party flag.

Activists of the Congress front organisations, including the Mahila Congress and the National Students' Union of India, also made a beeline to Gandhi's residence.

Patil trounced Shekhawat by a margin of 3.06 lakh vote value in the July 19 election, results of which were declared on Saturday.

Patil will be sworn-in as President on July 25.
