Cong fails to improve strength in Kanpur region

Kanpur, May 12: The Congress Party has failed to improve its position in the assembly elections in Kanpur region despite an intense campaign by the party chief Sonia Gandhi, MP Rahul Gandhi and host of senior leaders and film stars.

Out of 14 assembly seats in the twin districts of Kanpur city and Kanpur Dehat, Congress could win only two seats of Govind Nagar and Sisamau with the sitting MLAs Ajay Kapoor and Sanjeev Dariyabadi retaining them.

Four candidates of the party have even lost their deposits.

Sonia Gandhi had not only launched her campaign from the city, but also addressed another meeting before the campaigning ended.

Besides, the city is also the home town of Union Minister Sriprakash Jaiswal.

Rahul Gandhi spent two days in the city and participated in road show at various assembly constituencies, which was attended by large crowd in the city blamed groupism in the party and Central leadership for the debacle of party in the election.
