UN launches campaign to end violence against women

New York, Nov 25: The United Nations today launched a major campaign aimed to raise awareness about violence against women worldwide and seek vigorous steps to end it. The 16-day campaign will focus on bride burning, sexual violence as a weapon of war, genital mutilation, date rape, child marriage, gender-based violence and honour killing, among other abuses. The launching of the campaign coincides with the International Day of Elimination of Violence Against Women.

Dalit girl gets education rights under Domestic Violence Act

Jaipur, Nov 25: A court here provided relief to a 20-year-old Dalit college girl under the Domestic Violence Act by allowing her to continue her studies without interference from her parents and relatives. The court also asked the family not to stop Bimla from going to college or malign her character. The court also directed the family to provide Bimla a separate room and kitchen in the house.

Man rapes infant daughter in Jhansi

Jhansi, Nov 25: A man allegedly raped his two-year-old daughter in Nawabad area here last night, police said today. Shakil, who is an alcoholic and a resident of Nagariya colony, took his daughter to a secluded spot and sexually assaulted her. Meanwhile, the condition of the minor was stated to be critical and she was undergoing treatment at a local hospital.

3 farmers commit suicide in Vidarbha

Akola, Nov 25: Three debt-ridden farmers in cotton rich belt of West Vidarbha region of Maharashtra have committed suicide during the last three days, police said on Saturday.

Flesh trade increasing in Lhasa Tibetan Women’s Association

Dehradun, Nov 25: The Uttaranchal Tibetan Women’s Association has claimed there has been an increase in harassment of Tibetan women by Chinese government in Tibet and flesh trade in Lhasa has shot up since 1995. The association has stated that just in the capital of Tibet Lhasa, more than 658 flesh trade centres were operating. Atrocities against women are rampant. The association has sought closure of these centres from the Chinese government.

Suicide due to poverty in W Bengal

Malda (WB), Nov 25: Four members of a family died when a housewife fighting extreme poverty allegedly poisoned her daughters and consumed poison at their home in West Bengal's Malda district today.

Delhi court acquits man of rape charge

New Delhi, Nov 25: A Delhi court has acquitted a man of charges of raping a woman after administering her some intoxicating substance eight years ago. Three others, accused of intimidating her, were also absolved by the court on the ground that the prosecution failed to prove the charges against them.

Dalit woman raped in Uttar Pradesh

Muzaffarnagar, Nov 25: A pregnant Dalit woman was allegedly raped by two upper caste youths in front of her 3-year-old child at Tewra village in the district.

4-year old tsunami victim tortured by adopter

Salem, Nov 26: A four-year-old girl who lost her parents in the 2004 tsunami was allegedly tortured with hot iron rods and blades by the woman who adopted her six months ago, officials said today. The girl is now being treated at the Attur government hospital, 60 km from here, they said.

Minor gangraped in Delhi

New Delhi, Nov 26: A 13-year-old girl was gangraped after she was forcefully taken from her home in northwest Delhi locality. The victim was at home in Nathupura area with her younger brother when three men barged in. The trio took her to a nearby desolate place and raped her and dumped her there.

Police arrests 2 for employing children in industries

Surat, Nov 27: Two persons were arrested by Pandesara police in connection with employment of children in some industrial units in Pandesara and Gopipura areas in the city. The arrested were Zulfikr Fazalur Rahman and Kaniyalal Ramakrishan, police said. Meanwhile, Labour Department had rescued 14 more children from an industrial unit in Sachin area, on November 25, sources said.

Farmer commits suicide due to heavy debts

Machilipatnam (AP), Nov 28: A farmer allegedly committed suicide by consuming pesticide due to heavy debts at Papavnisenam village in Krishna district of Andhra Pradesh. B Venkateswara Rao (48) took the step last night, as he failed to repay the loan amount taken for cultivation, police said.

7 farmers commit suicide in Vidarbha

Nagpur, Nov 30: Seven debt-ridden farmers committed suicide in Vidarbha yesterday, activists have said. According to Vidarbha Jan Andolan Samiti (VJAS), a voluntary organisation working for farmers in the region, the deceased included two from Akola district and one each from Wardha, Chandrapur, Gondia, Washim and Buldhana districts.

Rapists awarded 10 yrs rigorous imprisonment

Sirsa, Dec 01: A court here today held two guilty of committing rape with a woman of Mangala village in this district and awarded them 10 years of rigorous imprisonment. The court also slapped a fine of Rs 5000 each on Rajinder Singh and Boota Singh of village Mangala and ordered that in case of nonpayment of the fine the convicts would undergo an additional term of nine months.

Man gets 5 years for minor’s rape

Hisar, Dec 01: A local court here today sentenced a man to five years imprisonment for raping a minor two years ago. Additional district and sessions judge, Hisar, R K Bishnoi also slapped a fine of Rs 10,000 on Satpal. Satpal Singh had raped the 15-year-old victim in 2004.

Tackling urban poverty big challenge: Selja

New Delhi, Dec 01: The Centre today warned that urban poverty was likely to become one of the toughest problems in the country in the 21st century, as the proportion of indigent people in urban areas was higher than rural areas as seen in many states. She said providing micro finance and entrepreneurial skills could address livelihood and poverty issues in cities.

Infant sold off for Rs 700 in Assam

Silchar Dec 02: Extreme poverty drove a cart-puller in Assam's Barak valley to sell his newborn daughter for Rs 700 barely three days after she was born. The report said the father discussed his financial problem with relatives of another woman in the same ward, and gave away his newborn to them for Rs 700 without informing the hospital authorities on November 28.
