Former cricketer Prabhakar in dowry harassment controversy

A case of dowry harassment has been registered against former cricketer Manoj Prabhakar here, more than four years after his estranged wife filed a complaint against him for torturing her.

New Delhi, Aug 23: A case of dowry harassment has been registered against former cricketer Manoj Prabhakar here, more than four years after his estranged wife filed a complaint against him for torturing her.
The case was registered against the former all-rounder at Kalkaji Police Station in South Delhi under Sec 498a (husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty) and 406 (criminal breach of trust) of the Indian Penal Code.

Alleging harassment for dowry by Prabhakar, Sandhya had filed the complaint against him with the crime against women cell of Delhi Police in August, 2002, more than 16 years after their marriage.

"We are investigating the matter and are collecting facts regarding the whole case," Deputy Commissioner of Police (South Delhi) Anil Shukla told when asked about progress in the high-profile case.

Sandhya is a resident of Nehru Enclave in Kalkaji. The couple have a 17-year-old son.

According to the complaint, Prabhakar, who famously blew the lid off of the match-fixing scandal in cricket before getting embroiled in it, tortured her in collusion with one Fareen, who she claims was a failed Bollywood actress.

She had also charged him with cheating her and illegally removing her from the post of co-director of the cosmetic company, which the two had set up.
