Ranchi: Three persons were on Saturday killed
when a bridge collapsed in Palamau while a high alert was
sounded in several districts following possibility of floods
in the wake of incessant rains and dam waters being released
into rivers in Jharkhand.
Two women and a girl were killed when Ausnae road
bridge over Koel river collapsed under Chenpur block in
Palamau district this evening, the police said at Palamau?s
headquarter town of Medininagar.
Another bridge over Tehela river in neighbouring
Garhwa district also collapsed last night, cutting off road
link to Chhattisgarh and Uttar Pradesh, a senior official in
Garhwa said.
A press release issued by the Disaster Management
department warned about possible floods and advised people
staying in low-lying areas in Palamau, Garhwa, Sahebganj,
Godda, Pakur and Jamshedpur, Gumla, Simdega and Lohardaga to
move to safer places.
The flood alert was issued after 34,000 cusec water
was released from Bansagar in Madhya Pradesh and 1,70,000
cusec water released from Rehend in Uttar Pradesh which would
swell rivers flowing in the districts bordering those states,
the release said.
The Ganga is also flowing above danger level in
Sahebganj, it added.
The weather office forecast rains in the next 12 to 24
hours across Jharkhand, which recorded 80 to 90 mm rainfall
during the last three days caused by a deep depression.
According to an official press release, people staying
in low lying areas in Palamau, Garhwa, Chatra, Sahebganj,
Godda, Pakur, Jamshedpur, Gumla, Simdega, Lohardaga, Ranchi,
Khunti and Bokaro were advised be alert in the wake of release
of water by Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh from their
respective dams.
