New Act to fix minimum qualifications of senate members in Assam

Assam CM said the Act will be enacted following Assam Governor's controversial nomination of 10 members to the Court of Dibrugarh University.

Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Monday said a new Act will be enacted soon for fixing the minimum qualification of persons appointed in the board or senate or court of any university.

"We will make an Act very soon. In this Act, we will fix the minimum qualification of the persons appointed in the board or senate or court of any university of Assam," Gogoi told reporters here.

Gogoi said the Act will be enacted following Assam Governor Padmanabha Balakrishna Acharya's controversial nomination of 10 members to the Court of Dibrugarh University in his capacity as Chancellor of the varsity.

The Chief Minister in his letter on November 28 to President Pranab Mukherjee for his immediate intervention to replace Acharya, who is holding the additional charge of Assam along with Nagaland, also mentioned about this.

In the letter, Gogoi had said, "Contrary to statutory norms of the university, His Excellency, the Governor of Assam nominated four members to the Court of Dibrugarh University who hardly have any academic distinction other than being office bearers of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) or its sister organizations."

"His Excellency, the Governor of Assam ignored deserving persons from Assam with brilliant educational background and sound social reputation and instead nominated people from other states by virtue of their affiliation with the RSS."
