Mangalore, Jan 27: Shri Ram Sena chief Pramod Muthalik today apologised for the attack on weekend revellers at a Mangalore pub, saying the way the right-wing group acted "was wrong" but insisted it was done to "save our mothers and daughters".

"The way has been wrong. I apologise for this. The way should not be like that. But it is our right to save our mothers and daughters," he said.

"Pub-culture is not our culture...Media should highlight and show the aim behind our act to the society," he said.

Muthalik denied his affiliation with the BJP and said he was only working for Hindutva.

"I am not connected with the BJP. We are working for Hindutva, to save Hindutva," he told a news channel.

Muthalik, 10 more arrested

Muthalik, the founder-president of Sri Rama Sena whose arrest was being hotly demanded across the country was finally booked and taken into custody but ironically for an old case of inciting communal disharmony.

The Sena Vice President Prasad Attavar and 10 others were arrested, however, for thrashing weekend revellers, taking the number of total arrests to 27.

The police picked up Muthalik, a former VHP leader, soon after he addressed a press meet here at which he virtually defended the attack in the name of "our culture". Muthalik was arrested under IPC section 153

The state police confirmed Muthalik’s detention in Belgaum, north Karnataka.

"Yes, we have arrested him in connection with a case pending against him in Davangere (a district in central Karnataka)," Sonia Narang, Belgaum police superintendent, told media by telephone.

Asked why he was not detained for the Mangalore attack, Narang said: "We do not have any request from Mangalore. Once we get it, we will detain him (on that count)."

Since the case against Muthalik is registered in Davangere, he will be handed over to the police there, she said.

Muthalik was away in Maharashtra when a group of 40 people bashed up young women in a Mangalore pub. Sri Rama Sena claimed responsibility for the attack.

Its Karnataka vice-president Prasad Attavara and 26 others have been arrested for the Mangalore attack.

As a person comented early, ``Your are paying for what you did`` Bad time started for karnataka as BJP got into rule, first it was against inocent christian nuns and monks now its against young girls, next what..? lets wait and see. Cluture is when you respect a women. No one has any right to say us how to live our life, we are in an Independent country., oh sorry ``are we...?`` -tom - a
Instead of going to pubs and involving in molestation and extortion, So called Rama sena if you have guts and concern then stop the manufacture and sales of alcohol and tobacco in Karnataka that’s the root cause for all the things not the PUB. -Jai Hind - bangalore a
In Hinduism, there is no room for anyone to force anything on anyone else. Even the Gita, the Lord himself says, one must accept only if fully convinced. This approach is what makes Hindusism a very tolerant religion that does not divide mankind into `believers` and `nonbelievers`, the hallmark of semetic religions. Conversion is a ridiculous concept when considered on a philosophic plane and it does not exist in Hinduism. Yet, our noble religion is stigmatized by followers of Ram and Shiva. I guess the women-beaters of Karnataka are the fllowers of some goonda UP bhaiyya, not the avatar Ram. And like someone obderved, pubs in India are not really safe for women..this is true. Women must be aware of this when they enter pubs and make arrangenments for their own safety. -Raj - Bangalore a

ram sena says ``we are saving our mothers and daughters``, is this the way to save mothers and daughters, you are rather beating them on the name of God and modesty. in the 60th year of freedom we are still talking about slavery and backward attitude. this is sheer non sense, this will not reduce any kind of sin but sure will give strength to sustain. -Tushar - Hyderabad a
Binu satsang vivek na hoi.....today ``satsang`` is going on at full speed in many such places like pubs etc. That`s why we daily hear and read on the criminal pages how the new modern Vivekijan/Mahatma`s have again contributed to the peace in the society. Shortly, even police force will not be necessary anymore....thanks to the pubs. -chandra kant - a
Beating people is not the right kind of action. Take a picture and send it to the parents of the children: this is your son/daughter doing....Then it`s to the parents to take or not take action. -shirley - a
