Bangalore, May 26: Women failed to make a mark in the Karnataka assembly elections with just three of the 108 candidates from the fair sex romping home at the hustings.
Incidentally, all the three belong to the BJP which this time fielded nine candidates in the election to the 224-member house.

The women who triumphed were Shobha Karandlaje (Yeshwanthpur), Mallika Prasad (Puttur), who humbled party rebel Shakuntala Shetty despite her getting the JDS support, and Seema Ashok Masuti (Dharwad).

Among the prominent losers were Mamatha Nichani, daughter of former Chief Minister Ramakrishna Hegde and Anupama S G, fielded against the Gowda brothers, H D Kumaraswamy and H D Revanna in Ramanagara and Holenarsipur segments respectively.

In Terdal, the lone women cine star, Umashree, finished a poor third.

In the city, head of the State Women's Commission, Pramila Nesargi of the BJP failed to gain an entry into the winners' list. In Kampli, Sannahanumakka, who lost to T H Suresh, garnered 39,052 votes against 61,388 votes.

Among the other major parties, Congress fielded 11 women and JDS, BSP and JDU ten each.

Despite the furore created over the demand for 33 per cent reservation for women, women candidates were given less than five per cent representation this polls.

In the first phase, a total of 17 women were issued tickets by the major parties while in the second phase 14 contested the polls from these parties. In the third phase 23 women contested the elections.
